Both common colds and flu are caused by viruses, and both are respiratory infections. Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. Special tests can tell if a person is sick with flu. What are the symptoms of flu versus the symptoms of a cold?
The symptoms of flu can include fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue (tiredness). Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems. The following symptoms can be present in flu, but generally aren't present in a cold: • Running a fever (temperature of 100.4ºF or higher) • Severe muscle aches • Severe fatigue • Nausea and vomiting • Diarrhea and/or stomach pains The other difference between the two is longevity. While colds might only last for a few days, up to a week or so in the majority of cases, flu symptoms can be present for up to two weeks.
Nausea vomiting
Common problems that may cause nausea and vomiting include: Food allergies. Infections of the stomach or bowels, such as the "stomach flu" or food poisoning. Leaking of stomach contents (food or liquid) upward (also called gastroesophageal reflux or GERD)
Strep throat
Strep throat is a bacterial infection that can make your throat feel sore and scratchy. Strep throat accounts for only a small portion of sore throats. If untreated, strep throat can cause complications, such as kidney inflammation or rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever can lead to painful and inflamed joints, a specific type of rash, or heart valve damage. Signs and symptoms of strep throat can include:· Throat pain that usually comes on quickly· Painful swallowing· Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus· Tiny red spots on the area at the back of the roof of the mouth (soft or hard palate)· Swollen, tender lymph nodes in your neck· Fever· Headache· Rash· Nausea or vomiting, especially in younger children· Body aches
Sinus Infection (Sinusitis)
Sinusitis is swelling of the sinuses, usually caused by an infection. It's common and usually clears up on its own within 2 to 3 weeks. But medicines can help if it's taking a long time to go away.Symptoms of sinusitis include:
